When most people think of the word pain, they remember a time when they stubbed their toe on a nightstand or scraped their knee. It is interpreted as a physical discomfort, likely from an injury, but everywhere I look I see many individuals suffering who are not in casts or on crutches. Some of these people are suffering from mental and emotional pain. Ever since I encountered a life changing experience I realized that pain can be physical discomfort, but also emotional.
Two years ago when I was a junior in high school I was involved in a motorcycle accident. I was just hanging out and having a grand time riding street bikes with a few buddies. On an access road in Missouri, all of us were doing tricks and filming them. I went to attempt a combo, but as I was stepping down from the gas tank to stand on the seat, my foot slipped off the bike, and I hit the ground hard. When I stood up the pain had already taken its toll. Both my wrists lay limp and a strong burning sensation went all the way up my arms. When I arrived to the hospital they immediately thought they would have to perform surgery which made me worried and uncomfortable. As well as physical pain, I endured emotional pain when they told me about the surgery. I was scared that my wrists would never be right again.
.As I entered school a few days later I received looks from every person who passed me. They gawked and muttered to their friends and others. I knew that they were talking about me, why wouldn’t they; I had a cast on each arm that extended from my wrist to my shoulder. Without my hands I was helpless. I could not even move my elbows or fingers. I will never forget the struggles I had to face in everyday life. Just a simple thing as eating food was impossible for me to achieve. I had to be dressed every morning for school. I was made fun of by people I called my friends. This was not the condition I pictured myself to be in.
