The focus of this research is on the recruitment practices of OP. The reason this business was chosen is that OP runs such a unique schedule for its operation with its seasonal need for employees.

OP has been in business for over 25 years, although it was not always owned by XYZ Company. OP entered the XYZ family in 2004. OP is a 360 amusement park which means that it offers a large selection of entertainment from roller coaster rides to air shows. OP operates and gauges itself against the entertainment industry in attractions. OP markets itself as a regional park, meaning that the company relies on repeat business and advertises to local markets. OP does not do any out of province advertising. OP has a unique view on competitors in that it sees any dollar spent by consumers on other types of entertainment as competition. This is interesting since OP is owned by Turner, who owns many entertainment facilities besides OP. Local competitors specifically in attractions would be Darien Lake, and even the CN tower.

A common perception of OP is that they are closed during the winter months and open in late spring. This may be true for the actual front gates but it’s far from the truth when it comes to the internal workings of the company including Human Resources. For this paper, Ms. S. Edmond, HR Manager for OP, was interviewed. Ms. Edmond has been there for over 20 years.

Currently HR employs 7 full-time staff and approximately 25 season/part-time staff mainly between the busiest time; January to April. Currently there is 3 full-time HR staff responsible for the area of recruitment. The paper will make reference to both full time and seasonal employees but the focus is on the practices surrounding full-time positions. OP currently employs 150 full-time and 3500 seasonal employees in many departments including food, beverage, concession, mechanics, fiberglass, plumbers, electricians, stores, guest...
