Charles Dickens – Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens is one oft the most popular English writers. He was born in 1842, when his father worked in a government office. His father was unable to bring most of the money home. In the youth of Dickens, his father went into prison because he wasn't able to pay his bills. He lived in a very poor family and had a lot of unpleasant jobs, where he met large numbers of people. In his books he often describes the people he had worked for, the people he had worked with. The story usually takes place in London scenes he had experienced himself.

Short after the birth of Oliver Twist his mother dies. That is why he is born into a world without love and pity for him. On his ninth birthday he asks Mr. Bumble, who is the owner of the workhouse in which Oliver was born, if he would give him more food, but Mr. Bumble gets angry and sells Oliver to a coffin maker. But this man doesn't treat him well, so he runs away to London. In London he contacts a group of thieves. They want him to join them. He joins them and they force him to burgle into a house, but he gets badly injured. When he recovers, the thieves get him back with a truck. One day they find out that Oliver has a rich family. Now Monk, his half brother, destroys the family ring to prevent Oliver from getting any money from his family. In the end the thieves get killed and Oliver and Monk get very rich. But Monk isn't able to keep the money and gets into prison.
