Over the past several years, the United States has been making attempts to stimulate a slumping economy, and this has increasingly become the case as the words recession and even depression are often spoken in relation to the state of the economic future of the nation. The reasons for the poor state of the economy are many no one can deny, from a convoluted mixture of the failed dot-com bubble, corporate scandals, a greed stricken housing market, and other factors.
Despite the current state of the economy, businesses are always in business to make money. All businesses strive and aspire to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage over their competitors. A strategy came to the forefront in 1989 that businesses used to increase their profit margins and focus on core activities or area of expertise of a business, while finding other avenues to support the areas whereas they were lacking in internal competency called outsourcing.
According to Griffin and Moorhead, outsourcing is, “the practice of hiring other firms to do work previously performed by the organization itself.” (2007, p. 47). For example, an accounting firm that specializes in accounting may outsource its information technology help desk operations, a secondary activity of the firm, to an information technology help desk company. Over the past several decades outsourcing has become the status quo.
Things become more interesting with offshore outsourcing which takes outsourcing a step further and is becoming more-and-more common place. With offshore outsourcing companies will hire an external organization primarily in a foreign country.
