Communication is a must for any society, relationship and even marriage to stay strong and continue to flourish. Language is what makes communication a reality. Many other countries have declared an official language. America is still a nation without an official language. America’s most commonly used language is English. English has been the language of our four fathers, and ultimately the language that has brought structure to this nation. Since the birth of this nation English has been the accepted (de facto) language in America. According to a 2000 census 88% of Americans speak English. Identification of an official language can actually strengthen diversity, not dilute it, if in any sense, along the lines of nationalism. One of the most salient aspects of the identity of any national or ethnic group is the language that it uses to communicate among its members (Ricento & Burnaby, 1998, para 1).
