Of Mice And Men

John Steinbeck’s book called Of Mice and Men is about two friends. George Milton and Lennie Small were friends for a while. They traveled everywhere together looking for work and George took care of Lennie. Lennie was usually getting in trouble all the time though but George would get him out of it. But one time Lennie got in too much trouble. George was forced to kill Lennie when he realized there was no way out. Should George have shot Lennie in the back of the head? Yes he should have.
With Curley’s wife dead and Lennie running away, Curley wanted revenge. He was going to kill Lennie one way or another. George knew this and was trying to think of a way to get Lennie out of this one. But this time he couldn’t. The only way to keep Curley from getting his revenge is to kill Lennie himself. Curley could have done worse to Lennie than what George did.
Curley also could have inflicted more pain on Lennie than George did. George killed him short and sweet. Curley could have tortured Lennie with his mob. Slim as well thought George did the right thing. Slim was a well respected man and a wise man. His word means a lot to others. “You hadda, George. I swear you hadda”. Slim said to George in the end of the story. There is foreshadowing of this event as well when Candy tells George that he should have killed his own dog instead of someone else.
Yes George should have killed Lennie. George was actually doing Lennie a favor. Rather than trying to run then possibly getting caught and getting beaten then killed. It also never gave Curley the satisfaction of killing Lennie. It’s better to be killed by your friend who is trying to help you rather than a man who wants to kill you for revenge. It was a hard decision but it had to be done. It was the right decision as well.
