Odysseus As A Hero
Hero? What makes someone a hero? Well, the definition of a hero is : a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
In my opinion, I believe Odysseus is considered a hero.

According to The Odyssey by Homer, hero’s are described as people who are loyal, brave, and smart. Odysseus had all these traits, and appears numerous times throughout his journey. Odysseus is a hero because he is loyal, brave, and clever. He is a loyal man in more than one way. On his ninth year journey home, he and his crew encounter a Nymph known as Circe. The Nymph and Odysseus begin to have a disagreement, Circe transfers his crew into swines. Circe is stubborn and refuses to change them back unless Odysseus sleeps with her, during their altercation Odysseus said “How dare you tell me to treat you with warmth? You who turned my men to swine in your own house now you hold me here as well -

She is mortal after all and you, you never age or die...nevertheless I long- I pine, all my days- to travel home and see the dawn of my return.” (239-243) the text shows that Odysseus is loyal to Penelope despite Calypso’s offer of him staying with her. Odysseus loves Penelope and is devoted to getting home to her and their offspring.

Proving that he is caring, he greeted the housekeepers. “They came crowding out of their quarters, torch in hand, flung their arms around Odysseus, hugged him, home at last, and kissed his head and shoulders seized his hands, and he overcome by a lovely longing broke down and wept.....over in his heart he knew them one and all.”(22.525-529) The text shows that Odysseus cares about his servants, he breaks down because he missed them, they were like his

Odysseus is not justified in his slaughter of the suitors and the maids because of his self-serving nature. Odysseus cares for himself more than anyone else. He believes he deserves the best, and deserves to do whatever he pleases. While on the journey at sea, Odysseus and his men are to pass the Sirens, Scylla, Charybidis, and the kine of the Sun. When they first pass the Sirens, Odysseus tells his men “only [himself] she bade to hear their song” (117). Odysseus acts very duplicitous when he makes sure everyone’s ears are stopped, while he gets to listen safely to the music, showing he cares more for his own pleasure than others around him. Also when the men are to dock on the island with the kine of the Sun, Odysseus only warns them once not to eat the kine. Once he finishes with his little warning, he prays “the gods to show [his] homeward way” (120), suggesting that even if all his friends die at least he will survive. Odysseus allows himself certain pleasures and advantages that he will not allow others to enjoy, These selfish acts show his lack of equanimity when making the important decisions a leader needs to make.…

What makes a person a hero? A hero is a person who puts others lives in front of theirs and treats those people as the main priority. In the book, The Odyssey, the protagonist, Odysseus, does not fit into this definition of a hero, although I consider him a leader. The reasons behind my disagreement with Odysseus not being a hero is because he drove his crew into a lot of trouble that was caused by his selfishness and care of his own reputation. Some might argue that Odysseus is a hero and I have an understanding of that since he did pull through with plans in many situations with his crew.…
