The Ocean
The ocean, from the Pacific to the Atlantic and the Indian to the Artic, is a vast and enchanting part of our world. The oceans of this world cover more than sixty six percent and that number is steadily rising. There are so many facets of the ocean that are yet to be discovered, but as someone who lives fifteen minutes away from a beach, it is hard not to be intoxicated by the allure that the ocean draws. Oceans have their own smell, feel, taste and sound, but every person who has experienced these sensations gives a different description; these are my accounts of the great ocean.
Smell, by definition is to perceive an odor or scent through ones nose. Going to the beach as often as I do, one tends to get used to the smell of the roaring ocean. However, after sitting and thinking about it for a while, there is a distinct smell that I could never forget. The smell of seaweed is so thick but smooth that it overpowers the smell of rotting fish from the near-by fisherman’s spot. The gust of wind blown ashore by the gigantic waves sends the smell of salt water mixed with a sense of calm that travels through the body to its very core.
Touch, the feel, they both correspond to the sensation of unimaginable and fantastic experiences that may only happen once in a lifetime. The feel of a fish swimming against your leg, or a crab pinching at your toes, they are such feelings that some may be fearful of, or delighted by. When a wave rushes towards you with its king like demeanor you feel the power it holds as it plows over you. The touch of the ocean is one of the most magical experiences one will ever come by.
“All life is a dispute over taste and tasting” –Freidrich Nietzsche. Freidrich was spot on, life is all about the ambiances of taste. When a wave taller than you can imagine is rushing over your head, you taste the foam entering your mouth and you can’t help but to let in salty water. It is a bitter taste,

Chapter 3 Gustation- Definition: The sensation of taste. Our taste buds are responsible for our sense of taste. We have so many overweight people in this country, because the foods that taste the best are usually the worst for us. I think life would be pretty dull if we didn 't have gustation. However, I think people would eat much healthier, and in turn not be so overweight.…

The ocean is a beautiful sanctuary not only for the animals that coexist within it, but also for people that spend more time in the water than on land. There are instances where the sea can represent a wide array of emotions such as respect, fear, and adventure. To me the ocean water is nothing less than a second home on the grounds that it reminds me so much of my home with emotions such as compatibility, fighting and peace coursing through the currents.…

The sand scorched our feet like steaks on a fiery grill. I had brought the Rock along to join me for a surfing lesson. We snatched our wetsuits and our boards and hit the waves. The ocean water sends a chilling sensation through my body. The polar water feels like a steamy shower after a long day, calming and relaxing. The waves are monstrous and intimidating, however, I seem to ride them effortlessly like I had done it a million times before. I dash past the Rock and under a curling wave. In the waves there are vividly colored fish swimming in schools. The water is so translucent that one can easily see the ocean floor, and the coral and seaweed that lay on…

Now at the age of fifty-four, Ramon must depend on his family to survive. His older brother Jose, Jose’s wife, Manuela and their son Javi do their best to take care of Ramon and make him feel loved. Through his friend Gene who works with a “Right to Die” organization, Ramon is introduced to Julia; a lawyer he hopes will help him persuade the courts to let him end his own life. Julia is dealing with her own degenerative disease of CADASIL syndrome, and Ramon hopes her condition will make her arguments more persuasive. The ocean has captivated mankind since the beginning of time. The Challenger Expedition, the first modern oceanography expedition, only began in 1872(“History of Oceanography”). Why was it that we ignored ocean research for so long? We have only “dipped our toes in the water” (Cousteau 194) and many people are afraid of taking a dive. However, ocean exploration is most certainly worth the risks, as the benefits of ocean research far outweigh the risks.…
