The following is a summary of Algebra test scores for 150 9th grade students. The tests were multiple-choice with a total of 25 items, and were given at the end of each quarter. Each test covered the content of that quarter's instruction.

2. (Second Quarter) 19.5 4.76 4-25
3. (Third Quarter) 17.5 1.81 5-25
4. (Fourth Quarter) 14.0 2.90 6-22
1. What can you justifiably say about
a. the scores?
The test scores decrease as the year goes by and the range stays the same.
b. the tests?
The tests get harder as the year progresses. Test #2, for whatever reason, has abnormally wide scores.
c. the students?
The students did not grasp the content or keep their comprehension levels up as the year progressed.
2. How would you explain the standard deviation of 4.76 on exam #2?
The scores were the farthest from the mean. The scores were either very high or very low.
3. Describe the trend across the academic year. Provide a possible explanation as to why this trend has occurred.
In general, the average scores of the four tests decreased over the year. This could be a result of students not grasping fundamental concepts early in the year. Consequently, those students who fell behind never caught up.
