Background
Overcoming the ‘digital divide’ facing people in developing areas is a key challenge. As closely bound to globalization, internet is a significant tool; nevertheless, the internet is only good if one have the skills and access to log on to it. Although networks of activist are becoming increasingly powerful, as they communicate more easily, the majority of people still cannot logon. Slum residents are left out from world wide communication, due to the digital divide. Fast technological change and global connectivity has generated information and knowledge gap. World Bank reports that about half of the world’s population has never made a phone call, while Africa has only 2 per cent of the world’s telephone landlines.[1] Only 2.4. Per cent of the world population are users of the internet, almost all of them are concentrated in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries that account for only 16 per cent of the world population.[2] Overcoming this digital divide is a huge challenge for the developing nations.[3]
The proposed project is in line with three of the millennium development goals (MDG). The MDG’s highlights poverty eradication (MDG 1), education (DMG 2) and strengthening and improving for global partnership for development (MDG 8). At the moment there is lack of information and of modern technology in the rural area and people are being left behind. Currently there is no resource centre in Kendu bay or in neighbouring areas but our findings and preliminary researches show that rural dwellers are highly interested and motivated in joining the digital age. Currently there is no central point where various groups in the community can get together, and share information and mobilize resources, where groups can build capacity, capture common interests and send a message to the larger world.
