Northouse Skills Inventory Assignment
My results from the Skills Inventory assignment from Leadership Theory and Practice by P. Northouse are the following: 19 for technical skill, 25 for human skill, and 17 for conceptual skill. This means I have a high range of human skills in leadership, while a moderate range of technical and conceptual skills.

From my own experience I agree with these results. My interest on the field of Public Health has gotten me involved in different experiences that had mostly developed my leadership towards human skills. According to Northouse (2016) “ Human skills allow a leader to assist group members in working cooperatively as a group to achieve common goals. For Katz, it means being aware of one’s own perspective on issues, and, at the same time, their own ideas to those of others” (p. 45), this definitely relates to past experiences of mine at different health studies where I was responsible of recruiting, and leading the study visits. According to Northouse (2016) technical skills “involve a hands-on activity with a basic product or process within an organization” (p. 44), while the the conceptual skills “are the ability to work with ideas and concepts” (p. 45). The author also points out different outcomes that influence a leader’s competencies, such as career experiences, which “ The skills model suggest that experiences acquired in the course of leaders’ careers influence their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems” (p. 54). Most of my career experience has been related to interacting and asking health related questions to people, not putting an idea into shape. The most technical instructions that I have followed at my experiences have been to follow study protocols, but these have to be adapted towards each health participant in order for him to trust me and share sensitive information related to the

However, I did feel as though ability played a role in leadership. I felt as though depending on the activity we were doing others had more confidence in what we were to accomplish so they took a larger leadership role than others. For example, when we did the hula hoop activity a group member had already done the activity, so we took her advice in how we should accomplish the task. Her advice was that we go slowly and use two fingers which worked better than when we did it as a big group.…

My top five strengths for the strength finder test were deliberate, adaptability, maximize arranger, and consistency. For once I can say I’m actually satisfied with a computerized test about myself. One thing I can say about my results from this strength finder it’s a lot more accurate when it comes to the qualities I posses. My results do not match up close to previous held beliefs about myself. I am typically seen as the kind of person to play the leadership role in just about anything. The point of view from others of me being a leader is completely off, I feel the complete opposite. I am more of an observer, and I learn from not only the mistakes of others, but mine as well. The vocal portion of leadership is what I am not too fond. I could lead with actions, but vocally I’m not as sharp. Not only that, but I generally go off simply instincts, and not what is planned. Maximizing my strengths can happen in various ways. Arranger is a strength that can be maximized by more preparation and better using more time for organization. I believe there’s no such thing as being over prepared. Adaptability is a strength I could improvise on by being aware with a lot more situations so when the time comes I will be able to adapt in the best way possible. All of the strengths of mine can be maximized by me realizing what makes that strength of mine and not focusing on my weaknesses. The more I focus on my weaknesses the more ill back track. An individual cannot build performance on weaknesses, but one can on strength. Majority of the fields in business best suit my strengths. In a business environment consistency is huge. The more consistent person gains the most respect. The more consistent you are, the more reliable you’ll be seen as. If you’re seen as more reliable by your co workers they’ll enjoy your presence. Blind spots may result from overextending the maximize strength. You can by overextending the maximize strength by simply over…

On the self-assessment inventory, I scored between 76 and 88 out of 100 on each key competency except for the Change and Across Cultures competencies. My scores were within the numerical range for 68% of managerial professionals that completed this self-evaluation. For the most part, I see myself as very good on a number of the skills such as balancing my personal and work life, embracing uniqueness, supporting the goals of a team, and making ethical business decisions. For the Across Cultures competency, I am lacking in global experience and the skills to recognize the differences of various cultures and customs. In addition, I need to improve on recognizing, leading, and implementing adaptations when needed by teams and organizations.…
