New York City is the greatest city on earth. I consider myself lucky for being one of few people to be born here. New York City has a vast amount of diversity and culture. This has given me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. For example, if you wanted to explore Chinese culture, you won't need a plane ticket, just a Metrocard to go in the subway! I jumped right into the cultural salad bowl since I started school.
I live in the Bronx and always love every minute of it. Walk on one street there is a building with Hispanic people. Go across the street and you will find a building filled with Southeast Asians. The great thing is that we all live in harmony. Being Bengali, I already know much about my culture. I went to school with mostly Hispanics, who taught me a lot about their culture. Listening to classmates, their families, store owners and neighbors speak Spanish: I began trying to interpret what was said. In the long run, my investigations helped me understand and speak a whole new language.
Another great thing about living here is that my taste buds are never dissatisfied. There's virtually an infinite variety of great tasting food to eat. The restaurants in New York City are terrific. I still remember my first lasagna. I was at a restaurant in Queens when I told the waitress "I'll have what he's having." I took a bite of the Italian food and was hooked for life. Now I always need my occasional lasagna.
New York City is truly "The city that never sleeps!" There are always new and exciting things to discover every day. The people are always great and willing to help you no matter what. That is why I plan on staying here for college. It will be a worthwhile experience. New York City has been undoubtedly great to me these past 18 years, and I know it will stay that way for years to come.
