Introduction

Network security is one of the most important aspects of any business with confidential information. Security on the Internet and on Local Area Networks is now at the forefront of computer-related issues. The technical jargon of the day is information warfare and network security, and there are valid reasons for their rise in importance. Throughout the evolution of networking and the Internet, the threats to information and networks have risen dramatically. Many of these threats have become cleverly exercised attacks causing damage or committing theft. As a result, the public has become more conscious of the need for network security and so too has the government. This awareness has led to the discovery that the predominant source of these threats comes from within the network. Protective tools and techniques exist to combat security threats; nevertheless, only with the proper implementation of an internal security solution, such as Host-based Intrusion Detection, will they succeed. Consequently, this paper is a discussion of network security, its history, the threats and responses to those threats, and the use of Host-based Intrusion Detection as a means of implementing a secure network.
