Myth and Symbol Analysis: How do they help define who we are as Canadians?
EH! – Canadians are rumoured to say “Eh?” any time they can fit it in a sentence. True or not, the ‘Eh’ we our famous for helps further establish Canada as a harmless and friendly nation. Someone that uses ‘Eh’ in a sentence comes off sounding nonthreatening and inviting, as if to say, “would you agree?” or simply just inviting the person to reply.
Ruthless Winters – We as Canadians are use to our harsh winters. There’s a foot of snow and it’s -30C, but hey, that’s not going to stop us from going about everyday life. What seems like torturous weather to other countries’ people is really nothing at all to us, and this we take much pride in. We Canadians are proud of the fact that we can withstand harsher – colder weather more than the average person.
Hockey, A Warriors Sport – It’s not our national sport, but it’s certainly the most popular. Hockey is played all over Canada, in some small towns being the only and main attraction. Hockey is played on ice, obviously relating to Canada environment wise. In another sense, Hockey is tough as a sport and requires tough Canadians to play it. And since we all play it, all us Canadians must be tough as nails – at least when it comes to withstanding harsh weather and playing rough sports on ice.
Freedom! Equality! Diversity! – Canada is very diverse as a country, with many varieties of races and cultures. People in other countries who are less fortunate view Canada as an opportunity to make a better life, they dream of living here in a place where freedom, equality and diversity exist. This makes us a leader as a nation and we are proud as a people to offer such opportunities for a good life to the rest of the world.
