My Last Day At School
My Last Day At School

The twelfth of February 1960, was my last day at school. I was full of mingled feelings of joy and sorrow. I was happy at the idea of freedom and preparatory holidays for full one month. I was sad at the thought of parting from my teachers, friends and Alma Mater.

We were asked to come to school at 2 p.m. on that day. All the students of the 10th class were well-dressed. Everybody appeared at his best. First of all, we were photographed. Then we had a sumptuous feast. It was given by the students of the IX class. All the teachers also were invited to the feast. We enjoyed it most heartily.

The feast was followed by songs and speeches. In their speeches, the boys made a solemn promise to work hard and keep up the glorious traditions of the school. They assured the teachers that they would never forget their paternal love and kindness.

They said that they would always love their school. They would be prepared to make every sacrifice for the School. They would never do anything unworthy of a gentleman. They would never tarnish the fair name of the school. The parting songs were very touching. They moved me to tears. Then a boy of the 10th class read out an address to the Headmaster.

The Headmaster rose amidst cheers and gave a suitable reply to the address. All listened to him with rapt attention. There was a pin- drop silence. He "Boys, make the best of the time at your disposal. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best."

He exhorted the boys to act, move and behave in such a manner that they could all proudly say, "Here are our jewels, here are our gems." He wished us godspeed, the best of luck and the best of success. He blessed us saying that success might attend our footsteps wherever we went.

His last words were, "Go out as torch-bearers of light and knowledge. Go out to serve your, country and fellowmen. Assert yourself. Go ahead and God will help you."

Sanskrit department of the school offered up a prayer for our success in the examination. It was followed by actual parting. The teachers stood in a line. We bowed low to all our teachers, paid them our last respects and homage, got their blessings and then parted with heavy hearts.

Hello, I am so honored to speak in front of all the parents, staff and my fellow students today. Wow guys we made it! These past 3 years have been full of so many memories that I know we’ll never forget. Think all the way back to 6th grade we were always the littlest ones and I remember feeling like a fish out of water. We were terrified of getting lost or being late for class, but excited to have a locker to decorate and change classes each period. It doesn’t seem like that was over 2 years ago at all. We came back in 7th grade, much more confident than the year before. We looked down to the new 6th graders, asking "Were we really that short just last year?" And by the end of 7th grade I was shocked that I was officially an 8th grader. 8th grade is defiantly my favorite year. I feel like I have everything under control. But next year is full of changes. We'll have free periods, more homework, electives, and an open campus. The new choices also bring new responsibilities that test us in figuring out how we grow from kids to adults. As we say goodbye on the last day we sit together as Balboa students, we reflect on what has happened the past 3 years, but also look forward to what is coming up in the next 4 years. My advice to future 8th graders is to keep up with your school work and try your absolute best and make lots of good, loyal friends that don’t get you in the bad kind of crowd. And most importantly, have fun! This is the last year you will be the oldest in the school for another 4 years, so enjoy it! I’d like to finish this speech off with this quote : A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.-Ayn Rand…

Wow! Never in a million years would I think I would be here on this stage right now. Getting my diploma...maybe but giving the valedictorian speech to the amazing co' 2k15.... I must've done something right in the last few days here at Salem because it's been rough. Coming into high school was a shock to us all. No harsh dress code...no lines...no silent lunch; We had less rules and restrictions so we were all revved up and ready to get BUCK WILD! (Or at least I was) Until of course the first day came and I got lost on the same staircase several times. That was quite interesting. But anyway…I believe I can speak for us all when I say our amateur fantasies quickly vanished and reality set in. high school was absolutely NOTHING I thought it would be. The classes were longer, the building was colder, the teachers were a lot less lenient, and Dr.Williams was soooo loud! I just knew I wouldn’t make it, but thank god I was wrong! I’ll never forget the enthralling perils, both good and bad, we all shared in Mr. Wisdom’s 4th period class. From the launching of paper balls and powerades to the reenactments of high school musical scenes….let’s just say that our learning environment never had one dull moment! Of course we paid for it big time in 10th grade am I right? Everyone had tons of catching up to do. We all fell behind at least once within our high school experience. But all that matters is that we never stopped trying. Lucky for us we had a select few of teachers who never stopped believing in us. So I would like to take this time to recognize them. To Ms. Brassard you taught me that knowing everything did not make me a good student but merely attempting to learn the material is. You also taught me that attitude is everything and a pretty face is absolutely nothing with an ugly personality. You gave me the best thing a student could ask for out of an educator, HOPE. I finally possess beauty on the inside and I thank you for that. To Ms.…

As Wendell Phillips said,”Every man meets his Waterloo at last.” Each of us is destined to bid goodbye to this world and to something eventually. Saying goodbye is a hard thing to do, especially to this school, but I shall never be unable to summon up the times I have disbursed and the reminiscence I have apportioned with my school mates, mentors and with the school. As I bid my last addio, as I say my last abschied, as I utter my last valediction to this institution, I shall be fortified and strengthened by the memories I shared. As uttered by Isadora Duncan, “Farewell, my friends, I go to…

Today, we are gathered to mark the end of one chapter in our lives and the beginning of a new one. Happily, we are finally graduating after four years of living high school life to the fullest. It seemed only yesterday when we first set foot on the SMCS high school grounds and as we look back and reflect on past events, we recall the countless times we were challenged and have succeeded; threatened and have survived; stumbled and have risen. There were times when we thought this day would never come, but here we are now, gathered for a bittersweet celebration of congratulations and goodbyes.…

This was not the first day of school that I’ve expected. Everything here is just so different from what I have been told in the past. Students mocking the “honorable” traditions, making fun of the slogans, I don’t think I will get used to living here. Ever since brother attended this school, father and mother had been telling me all the wonderful things about this school and how they hope for me to one-day study here. It is just so frustrating to have such a brilliant of a man as my brother, everyone is expecting me to live up to his accomplishments and even surpass pass him; which I know that I will never be able to do. There was something interesting that happened though. This new English teacher Mr. Keating, he is just so different and odd but yet fascinating. I’ve never met a teacher quite like him before and to tell the truth, I’m actually quite excited to see him tomorrow. Today, he taught us an important life lesson, to always Carpe Diem, “Seize The Day”.…
