So far, in major composer we have looked at and researched some of George Handel’s most renowned operas. We have also looked at his life, to set up a timeline in which we can look at different time periods when he was writing these arias and try to figure out what made him write these operas in the way that he did. I have been given the task of identifying how Handel as a writer and composer of music portrays emotion in the characters of two distinct operas Ariodante and Orlando. Realizing the only way I could accomplish this goal is by researching Handel and the Baroque sound. We all know that Handel played a very significant role in making Baroque music mainstream, so reaching him helped me conclude the rest of my paper.
Ariodate is a three part opera written by Handel in 1735. The opera starts off with Princess Genevra (Daughter of the King of Scotland) confessing to Malinda (Assistant of Genevra) that she has fallen in love, she is engaged to Ariodate. Polinesso who is jealous of Ariodante persuades Malinda that he is a good guy and eventually they become friends. With the help of Dalinda, Polinesso convinces Aridante that Princess Ginevra is his lover. Heartbroken by this Aridante tries to comment suicide; he is unsuccessful much to his dismay. Polinesso, seeking to win the King’s respect, offers to preserve the honor of Ginevra in a battle. Consequently, he is fatally wounded by Ariodante’s vengeful; brother Lurcanio. Ariodante, learns about Polinesso’s plans from Dalinda, appears and purposes himself as Ginevra’s one true love. Polinesso confessed his plans on his death bed and Princess Ginevra is pardoned by the king.
Orlando written by Handel in 1733 is a story of a great solider. Orlando falls in love with Princess Angelica (Queen of Cathay), who is in love with another man which is Medoro (African Prince). Hearing this Orlando practically goes insane at the thought of her being with another man. He is stopped from completely destroying everything...
