Music Critic

History behind our ensemble Just before trying to do my research on how we should approach our music ensemble project, I had come across with two experiences gained from music east and west course. The first experience came across in my mind is Chinese Opera where we had filed trip at Geyleng Community Centre. I was impressed by the way they maintained their traditional music and dance. The second experience will be the critique report for “The Map” by Tan Dan. I was amazed with the way he brought up the stone-man and other Chinese traditional folk music to the modern age. With the combination of these two experiences, I suggested the group to perform some kind of Burmese traditional music so that we can show what our traditional music is like as well as our culture. Learning Process of our piece Since all of the group members do not have any musical experience, there were many problems and difficulties we faced along the training period. First of all, the whole group has to understand how the music is composed and how many instruments are used. Pre-Project planning After coming up the idea, we went down to place where Burmese Souvenirs Shops and other Burmese Clubs are located, Peninsula Plaza. Over there, we found out that there is one Burmese Music Instructor, named U Myint San, who trained many students from polytechnics and universities for their Burmese Cultural Shows. He was passionate about Burmese music and he practiced since he was young. With the help from Burmese Shops, we contacted him and arrange to have a meeting during our midterm break. Before the project was initiated, we went down to the place where our music instructor was practicing with other people for one of his performances. He showed how to play our chosen piece and the one he suggested. Due to our time and musical knowledge constraints, we decided to perform the latter piece.
