Nat Turner was an en-slaved African working on a southern plantation in 1831. He was brought up taught that slavery was wrong growing up and he learned to read and write by his masters son. He believed that he would one day start a rebellion against slavery to try and stop it. On August 31rst a solar eclipse made Turner believe that it was a message from god to start a rebellion. He launched his rebellion that same day and killed over 50 white men that were for slavery. Nat hoped that this action would get more people to join his rebellion, but only about 75 other African Americans joined in with him.
The southerners were surprised and worried about this rebellion. They were surprised because this was the largest slave rebellion ever and it got momentum going to defeat over 50 men. They were also very worried after the rebellion because they feared it would set off larger and more rebellions of slaves all over the south. The northerners agreed with the reason for rebellion and were glad at what the slaves started to rebel and they started to disagree with slavery more.
Not long after the rebellion killed over 50 men, a militia of 3000 men was sent to crush the small rebellion. It crushed the rebellion but at the same time inspired other slaves to form similar rebellion.
Nat Turner was later executed on November 11th, 1831. But he was never forgot and inspired many people to go against slavery.
