I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 8th. My family and I moved back to Dubuque, Iowa almost ten days after I had had my first birthday. I then have lived in Dubuque the majority of my life. When we first moved to Dubuque I lived in Barenting lakes for five years until my parents got divorced. Then my father moved out of town and my mom, my sister and I moved to a two bedroom apartment in Dubuque. After two years of living there, my mom bought a house where we lived until just this summer. On July 20th, we moved to a house in Peosta where we live now. My dad lives in Waverly, Iowa and he has lived there for 7 years. I only visit him every other weekend, because my mom has full custody. My dad, Kelly, is married to a wonderful

It was back on August 24, 1995 at 9; 07 am when I brought into this world by Maria White-Dumas and Stanley. Their first born child then a minute later my twin popped out. Since that day I have been here in Atlanta, GA where I reside at 1978 Phillips Drive. There on my parents have made two additions to our family; my 15 year old brother Jahmal and my 12 year old brother Chris. I can honestly say my family is the greatest thing in the world. My mom is a Purchasing Agent for United Distributors, and my dad is an ISS teacher at King Middle School and South Atlanta High School’s Head Baseball and Softball coach. And with a family of all boys and crazy different personalities I have much respect for my parents for continuing to love us and put up with us. Then you have to move on……

What can happen in 30 seconds? A lot more than you would think. In DuQuoin IL, at Street Machine Nationals my family and friends decided to head to a dragstrip near the Holiday Inn we were staying at. My dad, mom, sister, and I rode in our 1993 Mustang, while my dad’s friends and my brother rode in their Tahoe. The night was going great, we could hear the crickets chirping and the frogs singing, it was peaceful.…

In 2008 I moved to Bluffton to help start a new aluminum remelt facility called Alexin. I was one of three invited to make the move from western Kentucky by the presidents of Alexin because of my knowledge of the industry, my reputation as a hard worker, and my positive attitude. In the past nine years a lot has changed. Even though I know longer work in the aluminum industry, I still pride myself on my knowledge, reputation, and attitude. The job has changed, but what it takes to be successfully in any occupation has not.…

My name is Kellee Layne Benjamin, and I will be twenty-three years old on February 4th, 2010. I was born and raised as a mid-western in Columbus, Ohio. I grew up with a large family of all sisters, half sisters, step sisters and one brother totaling eleven children. I was one of the younger, but considered to be the middle because of the age ranges between all of us. I grew up with seven siblings including myself, and the other four siblings were grown and had kids already. I lived in a small suburb of Columbus called Westerville. Westerville is a place where everyone knows everyone, even though they had four major high schools within this small town. Westerville is a very friendly place, where not a lot of crimes were committed. Westerville was “dry” my whole life growing up, but has recently changed so that they sell alcohol in certain markets around town.…

5:45 a.m., Wednesday, Boxing Day, 2013. I was sleeping soundly in my bed when the phone rang. I could hear the sound of someone getting up to pick up the phone. Shortly afterwards, I could hear the sound of weeping. I heard my Mom tell my Dad that Oma had passed away. Two days ago we had received word that she had fallen on her back and suffered a concussion. The fall might have been caused by her struggle with Alzheimer’s.…

April 7th, 1999 is when I was born on Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. I only lived there for two weeks after I was born. While we were in South Dakota my parents had bought my cat Sadie. She is actually still alive to this day! My mom had told me that the night I was born the doctor had an emergency Cholecystectomy and came to check on us the next day wearing a gown and pushing his own IV poll. After living in South Dakota for a couple of weeks, we then moved to Indiana. We only lived there for a year and then moved to Missouri. I do not remember anything about living at those two places because I was only about a year and a half old. We only stayed in Missouri for a month then we moved to Illinois where my parents family lived, and also because my grandma was diagnosed with breast…

As a child I have always wanted to help other people. When I was 8 my parents decided to separate. At the time, my mother decided to move my sister and I away from Chicago. My mother packed our luggage and decided to move us to Detroit. That wasnt the only time we moved, we moved four times while I was growing up, all over the country and even to another continent. Eventually we had to leave our mom in Nigeria and my sister and I went to Detroit. When we got to Detroit my aunt didn't hesitate to make us feel comfortable. It was just something about it,I still didn't feel right. I called my mother one day crying to her and explaining how we didn't like being there. After talking to her, I felt that it was time to go back to Chicago. I called my dad, (knowing I haven’t spoke/seen him for many years) and explained to him the situation on how we felt uncomfortable in Detroit.…

It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…

If you have ever been bullied, you know where I am coming from when I say that it is something that no one should ever go through. Unfortunately, I have gone through it before and I am glad to have fought through it. I can clearly remember the time when I used to get bullied. My family and I had just moved to Canada a few months ago and I wasn't able to speak English very well at the time. I was so excited to learn everything there was to know about Canada, especially now that I knew that everyone didn’t live in igloos. Before coming to Canada I was told by a friend in India that everyone lived in igloos, of course being six at the time I believed her without questioning it. I was also very excited to see snow for the first time because,…

Everything that shapes who I am today the things I'm interested in and involved with I share in common with various people. Dance, traveling and music etc. All these characteristics tie into my own individual identity. Alongside with my collective identity. Millions of others have these all traits as me, and other traits that make up their own individual identities. While these all make up my collective and individual identity they also play a part in making up my national identity as well. Moving to northern Wisconsin as a young girl was a scary and confusing time. Having been born in Chicago, all I knew was a big city, the crowds of people, the nonstop traffic and all the noises. My home, it was the only place I knew. How could my parents make a decision like this? How could they make me move to a place I had only visited once before -- but barely remembered? The sadness I felt was so overwhelming during that transition that I told myself that if I ever had a family, I would never make them move. As an adult, many years later, I look back and almost chuckle. My family and I have moved many times, for work or family and even adventure. Now as an adult, I push my children to find adventure in every move…

I remember when they kicked us out. It was only a couple of weeks ago. We Indians were minding our own business when the troops first came. They dragged us out of our tents and sent us walking with only the clothes on our back. My family decided to go to the Oklahoma region along with our tribe. And so here we are, walking through forests, woods, and plains on The Trail of Tears, looking for our destination. We have been walking since, and our clothing can do nothing against the harsh rain, snow, and coldness.…
