Introduction

The employee is perhaps the most important component of the success of a company. Motivation is what makes people productive in their jobs. A manager’s job is to get the employees to do their jobs effectively and efficiently. It is necessary for a manager to motivate staff since unmotivated employees could cost the business money. Employee motivation is the key to productivity.

What is motivation

Motivation is what makes us do things. It is a result of our needs being met so that we have the desire to complete the task. These needs vary from person to person Everybody has their own needs to motivate themselves. How motivated we are determines the amount of effort we put into our work.

Why motivation is needed

Motivation can affect a business either in a positive or negative way. For example, in the drug and alcohol counseling field, clients expect a certain level of friendliness, confidentiality and service from the counselor for a positive experience. Unmotivated counselors who do not follow company procedures can contribute to an unsatisfactory treatment episode. This leads to unhappy clients who may choose to go to a different organization to get counseling. Motivating employees leads them to perform in ways that meet the goals of the company. Motivating can increase job satisfaction. Giving employees things such as a sense of recognition, responsibility, or achievement can bring satisfaction about. Factors that affect work motivation include individual differences, job characteristics, and organizational practices.
