Organizational Behavior studies the impact that individuals have on the behavior within an organization and how it affects the efficiency of the organization (Robbins, 9). The behavior of individuals that work in an organization is instrumental in how people interact with each other. The workplace is a professional environment with a purpose of operating efficiently. People work in the workplace. The organization may demand of their workers that they portray certain characteristics when dealing with the customers of the organization. So in essence, workers interact with each other and with customers. The organization has a vested interest in how the worker interacts with the customers, but may discover, how the workers interact with each other has an effect on how the customer gets treated. The workers bring with them certain personalities, values, attitudes, ethics and cultural differences. Each of these characteristics defines who a person is in how they live their life. A major part of that life includes the workplace. So how these personal dispositions affect the workplace is of major concern to the organization.
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines attitude as a state of mind; a disposition. The attitude of a person is shaped by many influences, but no matter what the influence, attitude can come out in many ways. When it comes to workplace behavior the attitude of a particular person at a particular time can be very important. The attitude of an individual has been linked to job satisfaction and to job performance. Understanding attitude and the affect it has on organizational behavior is important to a manager.
