Discipline is created in the Montessori classroom through the child. By stimulating the childs mind, allowing them to move freely and immerse themselves in activity in a calm environment a natural sense of self discipline will from within the child.
True obedience is not forced but comes from within. Through free choice and development of the will the child will form a conscious affinity to obey natural laws. As the child develops through natural choice and repetition, they become aware of their actions and impulse becomes a deliberate act.
When immersed in an environment that allows the child freedom to perform activities in a safe and orderly fashion, the horme becomes focused and his/her will awakened. The calm tranquility and order that is prepared by the Montessori teacher will
Children always lean towards independence. Preparing an environment where the child can spend his/her time achieving, absorbing and learning is crucial to the attainment of natural discipline. Free choice is one of the highest of all the mental processes'. (mont, The absorbant Mind).
An environment that allows the child the freedom to move around the classroom, choise their own exercises and work at their own pace will leave the child calm, quiet and happy. As he/she completes each exercise, he/she will feel confident within his/her self and there will be no need for praise or approval. Through his/her own efforts and concentration an inner discipline will naturally develop.
Whilst the teacher should guide and ground rules should be set in place, discipline does not come from her direct orders. The child is disciplined from his/her own capacity to make individual, controlled decisions and actions of his/her own. If the environment is prepared in a way that is conducive to learning then a natural discipline will be more likely to thrive.
