Mitigation Strategies and Solution Michelle Newland Environmental Science Instructor: Rosemarie Rowe University of Phoenix Axia March 16, 2009 There are many different environmental problems in our world today. They range from lack of energy conservation to atmospheric pollution and everything in between. I intend to show how the rise of the human population has a huge impact on our environment as we know it today. I also intend to show how it could improve over time if things were to change. In 2007 the world population was 6.6 billion people, which was a jump up from the 6.1 billion people in 2000. The population is projected to rise to 9.3 million people by the year 2050. These numbers indicate a problem for us, as humans, and the environment as we know it. We, as humans, hold the responsibility of negatively influencing all of the important environmental issues such as atmospheric pollution, water resources, terrestrial resources and energy conservation. In order to fix one problem the root of these problems needs to be addressed first (Population Reference Bureau, 2007). There are four factors that are primarily responsible for the steady increase of our population; they are birth rate, death rate, immigration and emigrations. If the birth rate and immigration rates were to increase and the death rate and emigration rates were to decrease the size of our population would also decrease. The Global Growth Rate (2008) stated, “Every minute we are adding 140 more people to the world, over 200,000 more every day, and over 70 million more every year.” These staggering numbers are important because as the population increases so does our need for food, water and energy. Our food and energy production goes up, our water supply decreases, and overall environmental destruction becomes more prominent. When trying to meet all the consumption needs on this planet food production plays a very important part of over population. Human beings consume most types of...
