Mission Statement
It is our mission to enhance ones self discovery, future awareness and career responsiveness among all middle school students. Our main focus is self exploration, specifically “vocational alternatives” to the four year college track. As teens realize that traditional educational goals are beyond their reach, many of them begin to lose inspiration with their future endeavors. These students feel that school is not important as they often become “high school drop outs” or due to environmental stressors, have limited goals and aspirations for their future. As a result, they are unable to participate in vocational opportunities that would have been beneficial and empowering in their lives.
The Self Exploration Center will target the “underachieving population.” We will demonstrate a multitude of opportunities that will display specific educational levels, job descriptions and potential salaries. These perspective careers will not only be interesting, informative and appealing, but they will answer the question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”
Our center will be located in The Munchkin Middle School Guidance Office. The staff will be comprised of guidance counselors, parents, school staff and community volunteers. In addition to programming, continuous funding will be provided by local businesses, grant opportunities and private investors. Students will benefit from the daily individual counseling, accessible online resources, books, and local business information. Group sessions will also be offered as a free service simply for the distribution of training opportunities, trade school application processes, and other needs as they arise.
This will ultimately increase awareness within the career exploration domain. In conjunction with this, pre and post interest surveys will be distributed for their ultimate future success.
