There are many different ways to divide up a group and classify them. A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. One group which can be easily divided is the military. The military has four separate main branches. These branches include US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and the US Marine Corps. Each one of these branches can be classified into what type of work they do. The U.S. Navy was founded on 13 October 1775, and the Department of the Navy was established on 30 April 1798. The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas. The Department of the Navy has three principal components. The Navy Department, consisting of executive offices in Washington, D.C., the operating forces, the reserve components, and, in time of war, the U.S. Coast Guard, in peace, a component of the Department of Homeland Security. (www.navy.mil) The 21st century United States Navy maintains a sizable presence in the world, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It has the power to engage in forward areas during peacetime, and respond to regional crises makes it an active player in American foreign and defense policy. The United States Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the armed forces. Initially born as the United States Army Air Corp, the United States Air Force was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. It was the last branch of the U.S. military to be formed. The United States Air Force is the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world with about 5,778 manned aircraft in service.
