Identification of Potential Consumer Segments

The potential consumer target markets fall into two categories; the segments will be referred to as “Suburban Select” and “Young & Active”.
“Suburban Select” Segment
The Suburban Select segment comprises of Canadian parents between 35 to 49 years of age with university level education or postgraduate degrees; the life cycle is considered to be middle-aged achievers. This segment consists of Canada’s up-and-coming business class families; an affluent suburban family with dual-income couples (Household income $75M+) typically living with at least one child aged 12 to 17 years (Household size 3+). Given the segments’ high percentage of professionals, senior managers, and business owners there is decidedly a professional tone to this cluster. These consumers enjoy a financially comfortable, fast-paced and busy lifestyle; they frequently enjoy outdoor family activities such as bicycling and ice-skating, and often go on fun family weekend getaways. These consumers are considered active and health-conscious often engaging in sports activities, and are much more likely than average Canadians to jog, take aerobics classes, and play sports such as tennis and golf. Many take pride in their healthy lifestyle, telling researchers “I feel guilty when I eat junk food”.
The benefits this segment would seek in our product is the convenience factor it offers; which caters to accommodate their busy work-life schedules, as well as provide a healthy snack alternative that is appeasing to the appetite yet low on calories. This segment is more likely to be critical of ingredients, and scrutinizes nutritional labels carefully. Parents are often concerned about the nutritional benefits of products they are feeding to their families; it is important to emphasis the health factors and high quality standards of our product to this segment especially, in order to gain their confidence and trust in our product. In June 2011, CBC News.ca presented some interesting facts and figures about fruit and vegetable consumption among Canadians. Based on Statistics Canada report, for the first time collecting the data since 2001, Canadians consumed less fruit and vegetables (“Fruit and vegetable consumption declines”, 2011). Moreover, young males after age of 20 ate remarkably less in comparing with females, analyst Ed Rama said. Canada’s Food Guide recommends eight servings of fruit and vegetables per day for teen’s males 14-18 years old and 8-10 vegetables and fruit servings per day for males 19-50 years old. However, the diet of young Canadian males between the ages of 18 and 24 contains too few fruit and vegetables, according to data collected from the Canadian Community Health Survey (“Fruit and vegetable consumption declines”, 2011). Fruit and vegetable consumption may help reduce the risk of developing chronic disease, obesity and stroke and therefore, fruit and vegetables should be added into each person’s healthy eating plan. Young adult’s developmental stage is characterized by transition from parental control to personal control. When young men move out of home and set up their own place, they become responsible for their eating. Poor food habits, adopted through adolescent years, have long-term effects on individual’s health and can be transmitted across generations, as young adults become parents. The purposes of this paper are to analyze community issue such as insufficient fruit and vegetables intake by Canadian adolescent and young adult males and identify contributing factors (age, household income and education) that influence the pattern of fruit and vegetable consuming in this population.…

CHAPTER SUMMARY Market segmentation is the opposite of mass marketing and is part of the segmentation, targeting, and positioning framework. Segmentation is defined as the process of dividing a potential market into distinct subsets of consumers with a common need or characteristic and selecting one or more segments to target with a specially designed marketing mix. Besides aiding in the development of new products, segmentation studies assist in the redesign and repositioning of existing products, in the creation of promotional appeals, and the selection of advertising media. In order to be a viable target market, a segment must be identifiable (by some criteria such as demographics, lifestyles, or others), sizeable (i.e., large enough to be profitable), stable or growing, accessible (i.e., can be reached economically), and congruent with the marketer’s objectives and resources. Consumer-rooted behaviors and cognitions as well as consumption-specific facts and attitudes can be used to segment consumers. The most common categories used in segmentation are demographics and psychographics (or lifestyles). However, in most cases, hybrid segmentations are used. The primary examples of hybrid frameworks are VALS™ and the PRIZM™ geodemographic clusters. Other consumer-rooted variables used to segment markets are personality traits and sociocultural values and beliefs. The key consumption-specific segmentation factors are usage behavior (including usage rate and situation), benefit segmentation, and brand loyalty and relationship. Behavioral targeting and microtargeting are emerging techniques rooted in marketers’ abilities to…
