Merton Industries Problem Statement
Should Merton take on its own distribution versus relying on middle men (wholesalers) and the cost of creating that distribution in the southeastern United States network with little to know retail experience?

Strengths:
Merton Industries has the opportunity to eliminate the middlemen in their industry to try to gain more profit. The company does have a strong base and high quality products. The wholesalers in this company are strong as well. There sales are adequate and they have great relationships with the retailers. Since the wholesalers have worked for Merton Industries for so long they have maintained a good relationship with the retailers.

Weaknesses:
There is a consistent lack of advertising that can contribute to the decline in the market for Merton Industries. They have only had advertisement with magazines and newspapers. There are so many other ways that Merton Industries can advertise and at a low cost to help them boost their sales. If they do decided to eliminate the wholesalers they will be forcing out a good group of people that have been with the company for a long time. They will also have to come up with a new marketing campaing and hope that it works better than the wholesalers. If they keep the wholesalers they will have to come up with some strategy to help with the profit margin pressure that the wholesalers have been under due to the retailers.

Opportunities:
Merton Industries have the opportunity of establishing their own distribution centers and come up with new ways to market their industry. For starters they can start to advertise to new customers and try to give incentives to existing customers. They can also save money by eliminating the wholesalers and all of the costs that came along with them. Some of these costs are at a high such as, building costs, inventory costs, and delivery costs.
