In 1918, President Wilson established November 11 as a day to show honor and thankfulness for those who have risked their lives for our country. This day was significant because it was "The War to end all Wars,” World War I. This day was mainly set aside to show pride to our veterans of World War I. In 1938, Armistice Day, Veterans Day original name, became a legal holiday. In 1945 just after World War II ended, congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day was created to show pride to American Veterans of every war, with the oddity of a few years in which it was celebrated every year on a Monday, November 11th.…

The first thing I established when investigating text messages was that the brevity techniques varied depending on the purpose of the message and the relationship between sender and recipient. It also became clear that different age groups and genders text differently. Text 1 is a thank you sent by a mother to an adult child. In text message terms, it is relatively formal with both a salutation “Hiya darling” and a sign off “lots of love. M & D.” The only abbreviations come in the sign off “M & D” – which stands for mum and dad. The fact the M comes first suggest the mum is the sender. The use of the & symbol is widely used in various forms of written communication and requires no specialist knowledge to unpick its meaning.…

During the Civil War, over two million men and boys went to war, each with varied backgrounds and different stories to be told. While it is hard for many modern day Americans to fathom the hell these soldiers faced on a daily basis, it is possible to recreate illustrations of all the hardships faced through many documents recorded by the men with their first-person accounts of the battles. The lifestyle of a soldier in the Civil War consisted of multiple hardships on a daily basis which caused frequent issues in war, diminishing the number of troops on either side and causing the performance of the survivors to fall. Many of these problems are caused by extreme physical stress, many facing starvation due to malnourishment,…

What is the first thing that goes though your mind when you hear the words Memorial Day? What does it mean to you? What symbolization does it hold in you? Ladies and gentlemen, sadly enough, the true meaning of Memorial Day has been seemingly lost by the majority of Americans today. Many confuse this day for Veterans Day or even Armed Forces Day. Although it is highly appropriate to honor all our veterans, living and dead, and to recognize their immeasurable contributions to our country, this is not the true meaning of Memorial Day. When I asked you what the day means to you…what is symbolized to you, what went through you mind? Did you simply think of it as another federal holiday? A 3-day weekend? The beginning of the 100 days of Summer…a BBQ? Or did you think of a mother…

Memorial Day was first celebrated in the years following the Civil War and was officially labelled a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May, and it is celebrated to honor our veterans and remember past wars and the brave men and women that serve in the military today. Many people, young and old, visit cemeteries or memorials to honor a lost family member, or a friend. On memorial day, everyone is affected, even if they don’t know a veteran. This memorial day I joined my Boy Scout troop in setting flags on the graves of fallen soldiers and veterans who have passed away. We were honoring our community and the veteran’s service. But we could not honor those who fell many years ago in the Civil War.…

On the eleventh day of the eleventh month every year since 1919 we have honored our veterans, but have you ever asked why? It’s a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of our country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of our nation. Maybe because some veterans are forced to cope with war injuries, amputated limbs, disabilities or post-traumatic stress disorder after they return home. Veterans risk their lives for others who never had to witness or experience the emotional and physical stress of war.…

n for these veterans defending Americans of the United States in past wars, we may not be free right now. These men and women risk their lives to our freedom, and this took a great deal of bravery and sacrifice. Many veterans even died, and I have seen on the news where many more are still dying, and families are losing their loved ones. It is very sad that many people choose to risk their lives, but they knew the risks and felt it was their duty and honor to fight on our behalf. So what is a veteran to you? Is it a soldier, a person in the air force, someone fighting in the marines? That's not what they are to me. They are fighters, answering the call of duty, responding to our prayers, and most importantly that they help fight for our country, the United States of America.…
