The media is made up of the print media and the electronic media. What is aired on the various types of media may have a tremendous impact on our society and culture. Forgotten traditions, ethnic superiority and lack of self esteem with certain individuals are problems arising from the influences of the media in Trinidad and Tobago. If our cultures and societies are to survive, we will need to avoid becoming mimicking slaves to the media. Of course most of the population depends on the media as a source of entertainment but we shouldn’t practice everything we see and hear from the media. I believe that politics, the type of music listened to and the type of shows viewed changes our perspective to life and values. This is highly evident in our present society in the way people dress, speak and carry about themselves. Personally, it is very easy to get sidetracked by the media. I have experienced this and so this has motivated me to pass on my knowledge to others who are following everything they learn from the media. The media can transmit important information at times but can transmit the wrong type of programs and it is this that will lead to an erasure of cultural expressions and values.
