Media Violence has a Negative Effect

SLAP! “Ow!” my little brother Andrew screamed as my other brother Dallin hit him. “Dallin, that is not okay!” my mom sternly disciplined. “But mom,” Dallin whined, “They do that on Power Rangers all the time!” As the topic of media violence was brought up, this is one of the stories that came to mind. Media violence does have a negative effect on the minds of everyone, especially younger children and teenagers! This is not okay, and something needs to be done about it!
As we think about the story shared in the last paragraph, this brings up one main reason that media violence is a bad thing. Children think that it is okay to hit each other and yell at one another instead of solving their problems in a civilized manner! On the playgrounds at school, fights are a constant occurrence when they fail to share the basketball, or steal someone’s swing. This is due to the fact that the media is portraying this as okay! My sibling used to come home from school everyday crying, because someone would hit him because they felt like it! This damages not only the person who is being hit, but the person who is doing the bullying. Violence leads to other inappropriate acts that will get them in trouble as adults.
It is practically impossible to come across a show without some sort of violence involved. In fact, shows designed for children portray violence. Take the children’s show ‘Pokemon’ for example. The whole object of the show is to have the different pokemon characters fight each other! It seems so innocent until you watch you children or siblings acting it out and hurting each other. Some of the most popular movies this country has ever seen are centered around violence! For example, Lord of the Rings.
