Abstract
McDonald’s franchises have a 53-year history as seen in the appendix. It is a history of both successes and difficulties but is ultimately a history of an outstanding success. McDonald’s restaurants are located in over 100 countries with more than 30,000 restaurants. (McDonald’s 2005-2006). McDonald’s allows employees to advance within the company. It is continually inventing new products and new ways to promote its products. McDonald’s is on virtually every corner in urban America and yet still has opportunity for growth in rural America. This company is not a poor man’s investment but this allows the company to maintain its motto of Quality, Service, Cleanliness, and Value.
From its humble beginning of one California store in 1940, McDonald’s has risen to international prominence in the food industry with “more than 30,000 local restaurants serving 52 million people in more than 100 countries each day.” (McDonald’s 2005-2006) It is an entrepreneur’s dream with private individuals owning over 70% of its stores globally. The corporation has dominated the fast food promotions market with promotions such as “You deserve a break today,” “it’s what i eat and what i do ™ . . . i’m lovin’ it ™,” and various exclusive Disney film tie-ins. (McDonald’s 2005-2006). It’s “Golden Arches” are perhaps the most recognizable corporate logo in the world. Its menu has broadened from the ordinary fare at a hamburger joint to McMuffins and a full breakfast menu, Happy Meals, McRib, specialty hamburgers such as Big Mac and Quarter Pounder, and various other products. McDonald’s has stayed competitive in the United State fast food industry with its “Dollar Menu” which claims to be able to make the consumer a “Dollar Millionaire” with a menu that is “not just tasty, but smart” and all for just a dollar per item.
