Author's use unexpected twists in order to help the reader better understand their purpose for writing the text. This is especially true in 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare with the death of Duncan helping to better understand the issues of power, greed and death which are all evident in todays society also.

Power is a major issue highlighted throughout Macbeth but especially with the death of Duncan. Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to have the throne. Because the only way he will get this power is to kill Duncan, this is what she does. The twist shows the lengths that someone will go to in order to get what they want. Shakespeare has used Duncan's death to show the reader that although people want power, killing someone is not the best way of doing it.

Another issue in which Shakespeare highlights is greed. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are very greedy people. Their actions are a result of this and as greed gets the better of them, Duncan is killed. Shakespeare is showing the reader that people in todays society are greedy also however they should not let this get the better of them.

Death of an innocent is the result of both power and greed. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth were both responsible for the death of Duncan as the power that Lady Macbeth had and wanted for Macbeth and the greed from both characters resulted in the death of Duncan. Shakespeare wants to show what happens when people let issues get the better of them and he wants to show that killing an innocent person is not a good way of dealing with it.

The author's purpose can be better understood by an unexpected twist. Duncan's death was able to show what happens when power and greed get the better of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, they help the reader understand that it is not right to kill someone in order to get what you want.
