The great Roman Poet Virgil envisaged a majestic Rome where everybody was equal and where each individual would contribute his part to the overall strength and glory of Rome. His famous saying in Latin “E pluribus unus” (From many, one) summed up his far-sighted broad and liberal vision. His idea was to unite all people irrespective of their history, their beliefs, and their culture and to create a society which was united in Diversity.
The words “E pluribus Unum” were inscribed on the face of the Great Seal of the United States of America on June 20, 1782. The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities mission statement shares the same sentiments of all the learned men of this world, that true education can be received only in an environment that provides an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation. A diverse mix of students would only enhance and enrich graduate education by providing a variety of views and ideas which would develop the holistic profile of the students and also the college.
I couldn’t provide a better example of a citizen of the World than myself. I hail from India, the country with great diversity and house to the most tolerant people. India had the first residential International University of the world in Nalanda, over 2,000 Teachers and 10,000 Students from all over the Buddhist world used to live and study in this ancient seat of learning. Being born and brought up in the most beautiful and secular country in the Middle East, Oman, my growing years were spent studying and interacting with students from many parts of the world such as Brazil, Bangladesh and China. I completed my primary and secondary level education in the biggest day shift school in the Gulf, Indian School Muscat. To increase my profile of being a Global Citizen, I have even studied two of the most widely used languages in the UN, French and Arabic.
