Certain skills are needed to survive everyday life. And other skills are not a necessity but should be mastered to make life flow more smoothly. Everyone encounters some type of stress, so I believe all people should master the skill of stress management. To master the skill of stress management, a person must first understand stress and what causes it. Hans Selye (1956) stated that “stress is not necessarily something bad- it all depends on how you take it.” When people hear the word stress, they automatically perceive it as a bad thing.
Some people say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the same concept applies to stress. I might find a particular situation or event extremely stressful but another person could look at that same event in a positive way.
Stress management is important in life if one wants to become an effective, healthy and productive individual. Knowing how to deal with stress could eventually eliminate or at least lessen the anxiety that comes along with certain things. When people are exposed to stress for long periods of time, they have a greater chance of developing heart disease, depression, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, migraines and other conditions. Managing stress incorrectly could also lead to suicide.
People would benefit from mastering stress management skills, because their overall outlook on life could change. They would begin to think more clearly and they would notice improvement in all types of relationships. Also, people who master stress management skills tend to have stronger immune systems, stronger cardiovascular systems, less depression and a longer, enjoyable and healthy life.
Some consequences of not having stress management skills are mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. The emotional effects of stress like emotional eating and anger can be just as damaging as the mental effects. Physical...
