Marriage As A Negative

When one thinks of the word marriage, the typical picture that comes to mind is that of the mother, the father, the child, the dog, and the white picket fence. This typical idealistic view of marriage is not only uncommon in real life, but it is also outdated. Even though we live in a society that emphasises the importance of marriage, it’s simply an unnecessary legal formality. Marriage is unnecessary because one is more stable financially on their own, the risk of divorce is too high and too common, and one can find an equal amount of fulfillment in life without being married.
First of all, some can say that being in a marriage will result in a more stable and comfortable financial situation. But when thinking about your typical patriartical marriage, you have your bills, such as mortgage, phone, heating, electricity, not to mention the cost of children. Although you do have these bills while being on your own, you do have more control over your money. In a marriage, your expenses are more of an obligation, while on the other side of marriage; your expenses are more of a choice, giving one more freedom to do as they want with it. In a book called Society in Question, it states; “63% of marriages end up in high debt and are usually passed down to children.” This is an extraordinary number that will leave one to believe that being on your own gives you more flexibility and stability with money.
Secondly, people that assume marriages are everlasting need to think again. In a book called Sociology; A Compass for a New World, it sais; “divorce is becoming more common than people think, almost half of the marriages from 2005 have already ended up in divorce.” Not only are divorces common, they are extremely costly. A typical divorce can cost anywhere from 20 to 50 thousand dollars. Along with the cost, you have to deal with who gets what and who gets how much.
