tical wireless industry is booming and creating a wealth of job opportunities for professionals with experience in the development of next-generation wireless and internet technologies.

Nortel Networks, the Canadian networking vendor, has announced a £69m investment in the UK to expand its New Southgate and Harlow bases. The company plans to create more than 1300 new jobs over the next three years, in addition to the planned 5000 plus jobs in the UK that have been announced in the last year.

The company is creating the jobs following high demand for optical internet and wireless technologies from companies in Europe, where an extra 2000 jobs are expected to be filled by the vendor.

Approximately 700 new positions are expected in New Southgate, north London, within an optical centre of excellence. The further 600 positions will be in the research and development facility in Harlow, Essex, for professionals with skills in optical and wireless communications systems.

Ecommerce minister Patricia Hewitt said that the investment would help the UK maintain its lead in the optical internet in Europe. "Optical communications is a major enabler of ecommerce and one of the fastest growing areas of our economy," she said.

Nortel has more than 25,000 employees in Europe, with 16,000 of them in the UK. The New Southgate base employs 1500 people and the research and development centre in Harlow more than 2000.

The vendor doubled its optical capacity last year and expects to triple it this year, potentially creating hundreds more jobs in the UK.

Peter Newcombe, of the optical networks division of Nortel, said: "When the new sites open, we will be in position to attract the best personnel in a very competitive market."
