Foreword

The business of foreign exchange is getting increasingly complex and intensely competitive. However, in the backdrop of phenomenal growth of Bangladesh’s external sector, foreign exchange business provides a challenge as well as an excellent opportunity to accelerate the growth of bank’s own business. A high degree of specialisation is needed to carve for the bank a reasonable niche in this competitive environment.

This Manual has been specially prepared by the bank to equip its officials to attain professional excellence in handling the challenges of doing business in foreign exchange. It tries to capture nearly the entire range of activities typically performed in the foreign exchange department of the bank and tells succinctly how they should address the emerging issues on a daily basis. Accordingly, it is expected to serve not only as a handy guide for operational purpose but also for training and reorientation courses for the new as well as existing officials.

This maiden effort of the bank to compile and harmonize the principles and practices concerning foreign exchange would obviously need updating in the wake of emerging events and new experiences. I would, therefore, welcome suggestions from the bank’s officials for its improvement.

The bank acknowledges with thanks the efforts put in by the bank officials especially Mr. M H Shaikh, Senior Vice President and Kazi Saiful Haque, Assistant Vice President to prepare the manual. Mr. Syed Ashraf Ali, former Executive Director, Bangladesh Bank provided invaluable assistance in giving it the shape that it has finally assumed.
