Case Study VI: Marketing in Schools
Introduction
Marketing in schools should be regulated because this is a place of education with impressionable young minds; these establishments are there to teach young people about social interaction, healthy eating, and the pros and cons of materialism. Because of government budget cuts in school systems today, marketers see this situation as an opportunity to monopolize the younger school-aged consumers.
Relevant Facts Today, because of government budget cuts schools can participate in incentive programs such as box top collections, corporate induced free educational materials for product promotion such as getting a free meal from a fast food restaurant for attendance. The worst form of marketing is the organizations that use exclusive agreements with the schools by offering the schools a percentage of their profits to obtain a monopoly for their products.
Marketing to children is now a billion dollar profit for corporations that want to corner the young consumers into buying their products by advertising through media, school events, and transportation. “Commercials in schools occur in many forms. Products are directly advertised in a variety of formats and circumstances, including on school buses and through Channel One, a for- profit media company that produces news programming shown daily in thousands of middle and high school classrooms” (Hartman, DesJardins, & MacDonald, 2014). Some marketing can be positive such as advertisement by the military to influence young people to set goals on their futures. Materialism can be advertised by selling products with stickers, for instance the company that sales Vans shoes, in the shoe box are stickers and children place these on book bags and this form of advertising can be seen by other students making them want the product.

    Advertisers are targeting youth, “Own This Child” Written by Jean Kilbourne an informative article on this matter. Major corporations have recently begun using gaming [web] sites to create an image and “brand loyalty” early on in today’s youth as young as four years of age. Although The United States is an industrialized nation it is one of the few that entire campaigns are designed to target children. These same corporations are working with major television networks advertising products that pertain to program that is being viewed; with the intent to get them as a present consumer but also well into the future. In addition to television ads one company has initiated a program for advertisers to distribute coupons and promotional materials to a network with more than two thousand day care centers and about two million preschool kids. Companies are even going as far advertising in our schools ads are emblazoned on school buses, yearbooks and even scoreboards. Each day eight million students are successfully reached by advertisers. As schools become increasingly cash-strapped and underfunded, the more the schools except funding from corporations eager for a captive audience in exchange for their financial support. Educational programs have increased by 25% from 1965 to present putting more pressure on the schools to accept the funds from the more than willing companies and causing advertisement to become so over the top that when an spoof program offering students money to get tattoos of company logos many people believed it was an actual program. Big consequences are the result for any student doing anything to jeopardize funding from corporate sponsored events; such as wearing a competitor's logo to company sponsored rally. Schools are going to the extremes of signing long-term contracts in exchange for millions of dollars and exclusive rights to place vending machine where students all-day can access them.     In the film Consuming Kids, it really shows the dark side of marketing to kids. Marketing to kids gives them bad study habits because they will always want to play with their cool new toy that they saw on TV instead of doing their schoolwork. When I was young, I know that’s all I would want to do is play with my cool new toy. I would just keep putting off doing my work and I would tell myself that “oh I’ll get to it later” and later came and I never ended up getting to doing my work, because why do my boring schoolwork when I can play with my awesome toy. I think that from my personal experiences, that advertising to kids needs to have some kind of regulation so that kids improve their study habits which could also mean that the U.S. education system may become better because kids will be more willing to study instead of wanting to buy the new toy they saw on TV. I think the law saying the FTC can’t pass laws regulating marketing to kids should be torn up because it would make kids study more and it would also let the parents save more of their money instead of always being asked by their kids to buy that cool new toy they just saw on TV that everyone is getting. On one side though, marketing to kids could be considered good because it helps them build their imaginations and it gives them a good form of entertainment. If the toy is educational, it could help them with their studying instead of harming it. The restrictions placed on marketing to kids should be for non-educational products like action figures, video games, etc. The current form of marketing to kids needs some kind of reform.…

    Corporate entities are everywhere in today’s society. People see them on television, on the internet, on their way to work, and on their way to school. Advertisements invade individuals’ lives almost everywhere, but schools have been a safe haven from this – at least they were.
