I am convinced, that the plot of Macbeth is strong enough to survive transportation in a quite remote time and place. In Mark Bethinski the action of Shakespeare's tragedy takes place in the Russian Province in 1912. Coming home from the wolf-hunt Count Mark Bethinski, meets a gipsy-woman, who gives him a mysterious prophecy: he is and has to become a Prince. Tempted by his ambition for more wealth and power, egged on by his wife Elena kills his cousin, Prince Aleksej Dunkanoff , the reach land-lord and Imperators secret counselor. Bethinski inherits his cousin's title and property (sugar-beet), while Dunkanov's son Mikhail, convicted of murder flees. Tensions at the sugar-beet proceeding factory grow. The times of harmony and prosperity are over with Bethinski's death. Workers, displeased by Makarofski inhumane and avid new rule prepare a revolt against him. Recognizing Bethinski's cruel treachery the fabric's manager-in-chief Sergey Makudoff, the loyal friend of Prince Duncanov, swears himself to take vengeance on Bethinski at any price. Makudoff gives refuge to Mikhail Bethinski. Persuaded by the desperate young outcast, Makudoff contacts the sugar-factory workers and agrees to heads the rebellion. At the same time Mark Bethinsky has a nightmare: the gipsy he has once met gives him one more weird prophecy: saying "beware Macudoff; beware the fabric's Chief." And "none of women born shall harm Bethinski" and that also the most strange words he has nothing to fear until the wood, that groves near his fabrics moves to his mansion. Next morning Bethinski decides to murder Macudoff to defend himself from him and takes the gypsy's words to mean he is safe from all men since they are all born naturally and that only the moving of a nearby forest to his mansion, quite an unlikely event, can will spell his destiny. Bethinski understands that he cannot kill Macudoff and instead of it he orders his entire family murdered.
