Mangrove Case Study
A mangrove ecosystem is a general word that covers trees that are able to live in the conditions of shallow water area. There are many different plat families and these plants are able to survive regular flooding as well as fresh and salt waters. The mangrove trees must withstand being submerged twice a day by saltwater tides. The soil in which these trees grow in maybe sand but it is mostly rich mud. This rich mud is high in nutrients but low in oxygen. Mangroves have these aerial and salt filtering roots and salt excreting leaves that help them occupy the fluctuating wetlands.

Salinity, temperature and oxygen are all abiotic factors used to help with the growth of this ecosystem.
Salinity is a measurement of the amount of salt in the water. To measure the amount of salinity you would use a salinity meter.
Using a data logger you can measure the temperature of the water. You set the data logger to record the temperature at what interval is required. It can then be imputed into a computer which is downloaded to a program and then graphed.
Oxygen is a measurement of the amount of oxygen in the water. You would measure the oxygen using an oxygen meter.

Mangroves can grow in both fresh and salty water, whichever one is available to them. They not only tolerate, but thrive under saline conditions. In order for the mangrove to do this they either prevent salt from entering the tissues in their roots or excrete excess salt that are taken in.
Oxygen is an important abiotic factor in the ecosystem. Roots of the mangrove need the oxygen to carry out respiration. In order for the roots to get oxygen, they expose during low tide. They can also store extra oxygen in the roots for when it is high tide.

    Fresh water coming from Big Cypress Swamp combines with the Salt water in the Gulf of Mexico to create conditions that allow an amazing variety of life to flourish in features such as oyster bars, mangrove islands, tidal mud flats, and seagrass beds. If the conditions are right oysters colonize the sand deposits and the combination of oysters and sand create an oyster bar. Oyster bars gather nutrients by forming at right angles to tidal currents in order to catch nutrients from the incoming currents. Smaller branches form on the Oyster Bars and floating red mangrove seeds take hold in the sediments. Eventually multiple mangroves are caught and grow on the Oyster bar forming an island of roots and leaves. Overtime the mangroves arching prop roots will catch more sediment and the island will continue to develop eventually cutting off nutrients to the Oyster bar by restricting the currents that bring nutrients to the oysters. These structures help protect the region during storms, prevent erosion, and create Habitats for birds and fish.     Mangroves are a type of marine ecosystem. They occur within the intertidal zone of the Minnamurra River estuary. This ecosystem is made up of a community of plants and animals interacting with each other and the abiotic environment. The vegetation of the shoreline is dominated by the Grey Mangrove and the River Mangrove. At the study site, both mangroves can be observed growing upon yellow sandy beaches, but more often within grey sands and fine black mud. When a mangrove swamp is in a low tide, the trees roots will submerge out of the land curving down into the mud just like a human knee.     The Mangrove Ecosystem is a type of specialized coastal wetland found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is characterized by salt loving trees, shrubs and other plants that grow in brackish saline tidal waters. These wetlands are found where freshwater meets saltwater and are infamous for their impenetrable maze of woody vegetation. The Mangrove swamp is inherently a depositional anoxic environment.
