Conflict is a natural disagreement resulting from individuals or groups that differ in attitudes, beliefs, values, or needs. It can originate from past rivalries and personality differences. Conflict arrives when needs are ignored, things are interpreted differently (perceptions), others try to make changes, beliefs and/or values are different, and feelings and emotions are involved. When conflict occurs the team becomes less effective. Managing conflict can be difficult. If the conflict is understood it can be managed effectively by meeting both parties’ needs. It is important to learn how to manage conflict to be a more productive team and more satisfied group who feel welcome to communicate openly, take risks, and exchange ideas (Lesmeister, 1992). Individuals can become more effective in conflict situations if appropriate behaviors are selected for use. An individual must understand the way they act and learn ways to cope in order to manage conflict. Changing the way you act affects the way others respond to you (Lesmeister, 1992). Conflict can trigger many behaviors. Things will be said and done to trigger behaviors. Everyone has their own way of dealing with conflict. Several strategies in dealing with conflict include avoidance, accommodation, compromise, competition, and collaboration. Some ways to manage conflict include dealing with one issue at a time, choosing the right time for the conflict, agreeing to disagree, accepting the fact that conflict will occur, not insisting to be right, avoiding name calling, and avoiding threatening behavior.
