The relations between Indians and the English were variable. On one side of the spectrum, the Wampanoag and Puritans got along very well, even having the “first Thanksgiving”. On the other end, the Pequot War waged the Pequots against three English colonies. Both sides tried to assert their interests; the English used their advanced firearms to drive the Indians off their land, and also accidentally their Old World diseases helped their cause. The Indians used their knowledge of the land and agriculture to attempt to befriend the English, while when they fought they fought in collaboration with other tribes, mostly in guerilla warfare. Alas, the English diseases and weaponry utterly decimated the Indians, who were forced to move deeper and deeper inland.…

Spanning considerably limited number of writings, he focused less on the profusion of words than on the profundity of each word. Each of his works was the result of a careful deliberation and numerous revisions. He has often proclaimed his deficiency in the knowledge of the Malayalam alphabet. Ironically, his obliviousness to the rich sanskritized Malayalam that was being used by his contemporaries helped him to appreciate the beauty in everyday language. It is his great dexterity as a writer to bring out the richness and freshness in the local Mapilla dialect. Everyday language was his medium of instruction. Yet, even in the simple proclivities, he was able to yield poetry.…

The end of World War II led to the end of colonialism, which in turn saw the emergence of independent nations, trying to gain a foothold in the world. India was one of those nations. Before Independence, Indian Writing in English had no direct relation to the events which led to Independence. Hence, it was neglected by most critics. However, post-independence, this situation changed. The concern of the new poets became their relationship to and alienation from the realities of their society. In particular, they faced a challenge from the older nationalist intellectuals and from regionalists who demanded a renaissance of the culture of the pre-colonial languages of India.…

Have you ever been on a trip to any place in India, where you didn't know the language spoken locally? How did you feel? How did you manage to communicate? Now read the text 1. When I was a girl of about twelve, I used to stay in a village in north Karnataka with my grandparents. Those days, the transport system was not very good, so we used to get the morning paper only in the afternoon. The weekly magazine used to come one day late. All of us would wait eagerly for the bus, which used to come with the papers, weekly magazines and the post. At that time, Triveni was a very popular writer in the Kannada language. She was a wonderful writer. Her style was easy to read and very convincing. Her stories usually dealt with complex psychological problems in the lives of ordinary people and were always very interesting. Unfortunately for Kannada literature, she died very young. Even now, after forty years, people continue to appreciate her novels. One of her novels, called Kashi Yatre, was appearing as a serial in the Kannada weekly Karmaveera then. It is the story of an old lady and her ardent desire to go to Kashi or Varanasi. Most Hindus believe that going to Kashi and worshipping Lord Vishweshwara is the ultimate punya. This old lady also believed in this, and…

The employment of the educated lower castes in schools and government services resulted in the breakdown of traditional values. Joint families got divided into smaller units due to the need for some members to move from village to city, or from one city to another in search of education and better job opportunities. People also believed that nuclear family ensured more satisfaction, security and privacy, greater…
