Hazard Identification
Malathion is an organophosphorus insecticide used on agricultural and nonagricultural crops. Government programs also use Malathion to control mosquitoes and boll weevils. Malathion could be inhaled, swallowed, and absorbed through the skin and eyes if proper precautions are not taken for human population. Wildlife is on its own, effecting turtles, lizards, birds, fishes, and natural predators of mosquitoes that live in our nearby wetland. Proper precautions would have to be taken by the human population to protect themselves and I believe not all the people of Genericville will have knowledge. I do not believe all community members will carry out the safety measures. Malathion residue will be on everything outside including, but not limited to power lines, outside furniture, pet houses, and edible crops. Proper washing will need to be enforced with the proper detergent; I believe this task may not be properly maintained and carried out for its full effect. Health effects of malathion include breathing, touching, or ingesting, malathion affects the neurological system.
Dose-response Assessment
Neurological effects in low dose would include excessive salivation, tearing, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, pinpoint pupils, confusion, and dizziness. In high doses such as being outside when applied include tremors, convulsions, or respiratory paralysis may occur, sometimes leading to death.
Malathion also considered a carcinogen that may affect the body’s natural response to function estrogen, androgen, and thyroid hormones. Humans are not the only ones at risk the wildlife will face the same risks that follow all the way into second-generation offspring.
