Gender Differences in Language Use

1. Introduction

Language is one of the most powerful and common method of communication. Every race, society, civilisation adopted a language system. There are two sexes which use this form of communication: “male” and “female”. If we accept that these sexes are the people of different worlds, then we can obviously say that it is inevitable that there are certain differences in the usage of language among these two separate genders. We can call these differences as “gender differences in language”.

It has been always a matter of curiosity for people how, why, and how much differently do the genders perceived to express themselves while communicating. There is now considerable interest in the sociolinguistic variation associated with the speaker’s gender. Over the last few years, there has been an explosion of research in this field. Many articles have been published, both in learned journals and in edited collections.

The structured social variation found in the speech community can be interpreted in more than one way. Women as a social group are clearly different from men. As a minority group they can also be seen as oppressed and marginalised.
There are two main approaches to gender differences in language which reflect these two views of women’s status as a group.

• The dominance approach: This approach sees women as oppressed group and interprets linguistic differences in women’s and men’s speech in terms of men’s dominance, women subordination. This approach emphasises the hierarchical nature of gender relations and the dominance of men.

• The difference approach: This approach emphasises the difference in the gender roles and identities of women and men. According to this approach women and men talk differently and have different rules for conversation because they are members of different...
