Even though the Millers tale and the clerk’s tale are both written in the Canterbury Tales, they are strikingly different in many ways. For example, the roles of the main characters are different in both stories. In the millers tale, Walter is the king of Saluzzo in Italy, he was searching for a female who will always obeying his order and never question him, where as in clerks tale ,Old John the carpenter, a very jealous man who married a 18 year old girl, been cheated by Nicholas. Also the two female characters are also different, Gresilda is a young woman who has all the qualities to make Walter a perfect wife, through out the tale Gresilda never cheated on her husband no mater what happens not even when “Walter forged a Papal Decree allowing him to marry another woman of higher birth.” In fact that the young woman was there daughter, who been taken away by Walter after her birth. The main message of the story surrounds Griselda was that whatever her situation was; she always remains unaffected and constant to her husband. She remains virtuous whether she is living in poverty or among the riches of royalty. On the other hand, Alison is different, “She is the passionate young wife of Old John who schemes with a young student to have an affair.” She doesn’t really obtain what a wife supposes to have, not like Gresilda, she cheated on her marriage also she cheated on her husband. Another difference is in the size of the population in each story. The clerks’ tale take place in a kingdom (a palace) so there would be more people involved, but The millers tale take place in a some town , so there would not be as much people as the clerks tale. The two tales also differ in the thematic irony For example, the clerks tale is teaching us that all women should be like Gresidal be the wife that completely submissive to your husband. However, the miller’s tale teaches us the right balance between bawdiness and vulgarity. There is a triangle relationship...
