Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong was born August 4th 1901 in New Orleans. He grew up in a

very poor part of New Orleans and he led a normal boys life up until he was 13.

On New Years Eve of this year he celebrated a little to much and was arrested

for shooting a gun in public. Armstrong was sent to a boarding school as a

punishment, this thou turned out to be the one single event that changed his life.

At this school his rehabilitation included cornet and trumpet playing. He quickly

excelled through his classes and feel in love with the two instruments. When he

finally came home to New Orleans he did some jobs that did not interest him so

he soon decided that music was going to be his way. Lucky for him Joe Oliver

was in town and he joined his band as a cornet player. He began touring with him

and made a name for himself, but something was right, he wanted more fame

and more glory.

Louis Armstrong went solo in the late 1920s and this is were his career sky

rocketed, he released 13 albums between 1925 and 1933 and he soon was a

household name. Louis Armstrong soon spread to Europe and then back to the

United States, conquering everything in his path.

Louis Armstrong is, in my opinion and many others, the best jazz musician of

all time. He starred in many films and was the inventor of scat music. He is still

30 plus years after his death one of the most beloved musicians in American

history. When he died on July 6th 1971 more then 2000 people paid their

respects at a memorial services for him.
