Lord of the flies by William Golding

1.Why is this novel set in coral Island?

Golding set this story in a coral Island since he wants to prove that men are evil not because the circumstance but because their own nature. This book is an experiment in which Golding wants to point out that evil is in humankind's nature. By setting the story in an Island. The boys do not have external influence. In other words no corruption from the adult world. Also the fact they have paradise, were the could be happy and live peacefully, the mange to make it into hell. This also helps to prove Goldings theory.

2.Nature in different settings is display at the beginning of each chapter. Discuss.

At the beginning of each chapter, there is a description about the landscape. This description sets the mood of each chapter and hint us in what direction is the story heading. For instance, when the landscape is beautiful and the sun is shining, it means something good is going to happen or that everything is ok between the kids. However, when is starts to get all dark and rainy. It means something bad is going to happened.

3.Describe the difference in character of Maurice and Roger.

Roger and Maurice are to opposite figures. Maurice is a very good lad. He has moral consciousness since he has unease of wrongdoing. On the other hand, Roger is impervious and uncommunicative by nature. He is an amoral person, who has lacks of unease of wrongdoing. Unlike Jack he does not act on instinct, he executrices brute force totally at whim. He is a sadistic person who loves to provoke suffering in other persons just to satisfy himself. He represents the worst that develops in people when there is no restriction by the society.
