My Homeland
Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been curious about my roots. Where did my family come from? When did we come to America? Questions like these always plagued my mind. I wanted to go to Lebanon and reconnect with my culture. I wanted to experience what life was like for my family in the old country. I’ve decided to go with my grandparents last summer. This is the story of my journey to Lebanon. It was six in the morning.
I was woken up by the sound of the horn of my grandfather’s car. He came to pick me up to go to the airport I had slammed the snooze button about a dozen times. It was a good thing I already had everything packed. I grabbed my things and ran down the stairs of my house.
“Mohamed!” my mother yelled as I ran passed her to load my things.
“I already said goodbye, I really have to go. We’re late.” I explained.
“Not in your pajamas you’re not!” she indicated. I looked at myself and realized I’ve forgotten to get dressed! How embarrassing! I ran back to my room and started to change my clothes. In the mean time, I could still hear my grandfather slamming his horn and yelling for me. I finally managed to get everything together. I said my goodbyes and it was off to the airport.
After passing through security, we finally made it on our flight. The airplane was very cramped. The flight was very long. It took a long, agonizing twelve hours before our plane landed in Amman, Jordan. From Amman, we boarded another flight to Beirut. After taking off from Jordan, I was staring out my window seat through the clouds to try and get a glimpse of my country. After about twenty minutes, my grandmother pointed to the window and said,
“This is Lebanon. This is where you’re from.” I looked at where she was pointing and saw the most beautiful scene under me. Rolling mountains, trees, plants, livestock, and the overwhelmingly beautiful skyline of Beirut are only some of the things I saw at that moment. I just couldn’t wait to be on the ground. The...
