Strategies For Communicating Effectively in a Team

Have you ever heard the expression, “Great minds think alike?” Well, even though, it is generally believed that people in teams tend to have to think and interact the same to reach a common goal, people don’t really “think alike.” In fact, there are numerous types of learning styles and personality types that people can have.

Learning styles

According to Instructor Magazine, there are three main types of learning styles. These are visual, kinesthetic and auditory. Most people rely on one of these styles more than others. In taking the Multiple Pathways to Learning assessment found in Keys to College Studying, I assessed I am a verbal/linguistic person with strengths in interpersonal, bodily kinesthetic and musical learning styles. Since I am a primarily verbal person this means I remember terms easily, can teach, and explain things well and use syntax and word meaning frequently. On the other end of the spectrum would be a logical mathematical person. This is a person who easily recognizes abstract patterns, is able to reason inductively and deductively and performs complex calculations. Somewhere in the middle of the spectrum is a learning style that most people can probably relate to is an interpersonal learning style. This is effective as it helps the person cooperate in a group, communicate verbally and nonverbally, and see things from other people’s perspectives.

In a group that consisted of people with multiple learning styles, like the aforementioned ones, it may seem difficult for all of them to be able to work together and communicate in an effective matter. However, I believe that when people with different learning styles maximize their strengths to help others in the team, it can make other people much more willing to cooperate.
