I remember the first book I ever read. The book was red on the outside with pictures of dogs dressed as fire fighters. I cannot remember the title, but I do remember that it was one of those books that had like one sentence per page, and some huge pictures. It was early on in my life, and frankly, I’m surprised I still remember details like these. I guess its milestones like these that you never really forget, no matter how old you get.
My first real “reading” attempt was actually during my Kindergarten class. There were two teachers, really, the main teacher was Mrs. Lizano and her teacher’s aid, Mrs. Abreu. Mrs. Lizano was a very kind lady with long blonde hair, which she kept loose the entire time. She was funny, loud, and also quite tall, but of course with my size at that time, anyone was tall. The classroom was like any other, filled with our colorful finger paintings, books, crayons, play-dough on the floor, scattered puzzle pieces, and my favorite, the giant calendar. The calendar was a particular favorite of mine because it would show our birthdays, which meant a day of cake, candy and playing in the patio. My fondest memories from this times was playing in the patio. All the boys would split up into teams and play something, usually football. I always enjoyed football the best because I was one of the fastest kids of my age group. I’m not really sure what the girls would do during this time, probably sit around and play something. But hey, during this period of my life, the last thing I thought about were girls.
One particular day, Mrs. Lizano had something special planned for us to do. I figured it would be some game or some activity with numbers. I remember being good with numbers, so I always looked forward to math activities. That day, Mrs. Lizano has asked us to start reading a story that was inside our book.
